Rumors about the first iPhone Fold are nothing new, but the information about the name of the device has been mixed. Now, a new report claims that Apple has settled not only on the name of its first foldable but also on one more premium device.

Apple’s first foldable may be called the iPhone Ultra
Apple may use the name iPhone Ultra for its first foldable phone, which is set to launch this fall. According to a Macworld report, the company has settled on the name, which would join the Apple Watch Ultra and the M1 Ultra chip as some of its best and most expensive products.
Similar to the iPhone Air last year, Apple won’t consider the iPhone Ultra to be part of the iPhone 18 series. Still, the foldable will be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro devices, though there’s a chance it will launch a few weeks later and in smaller quantities.
How should Apple call its foldable phone?
The iPhone Ultra name was previously rumored by Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station. At the time, they suggested that other manufacturers would follow suit and call their wide foldables Ultra as well.
The MacBook Ultra is also coming soon

The long-rumored MacBook with an OLED touchscreen may also use the Ultra branding. Previously mentioned as a new entry to the MacBook Pro line, the device would be the first Apple laptop with a touch sensitive display.
Just like the iPhone Ultra, the MacBook Ultra is expected to come at a significantly higher price than the existing models. The laptop is also expected to offer several new features that would make it feel very different from a MacBook Pro.
The MacBook Ultra name was also reported earlier, so this is just another confirmation of Apple’s plan. The device was initially supposed to launch later this year, but the premiere may be delayed until the first half of 2027 because of the memory shortage.
What else could go Ultra

Another device that could get an Ultra version are the AirPods. Rumors about a high-end model with built-in cameras have been circulating for quite some time, and launching those as AirPods Ultra would make sense.
Apple is also rumored to have been working on a foldable iPad for years, which was reportedly a priority for John Ternus, who will replace Tim Cook as Apple CEO in September. If that device eventually comes to the market, it could also be called the iPad Ultra.
Among Android smartphones, the Ultra moniker is reserved for the best conventional devices. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra, and the Vivo X300 Ultra are just some of the more recent examples.
Undeserved distinction
Apple has been focused on promoting its Pro devices as made for professional users, which makes sense. However, I don’t see how a laptop with a touchscreen or a foldable phone elevates the professional user experience.
I’m sure that the company’s marketing teams will make the new Ultra name sound better than the rumors, but I’m not convinced it’s the best idea.
